Chalk Art Hopscotch | Interactive Public Art
Recently, I had the chance to catch up with Ex’pression students Ben Ng, Daniel Kraft, Seantel McHargue, Anthony Buell, and Sebastien Guerne. This group of wunderkind spent roughly 2 nights from 6-12 p.m. covering 0.3 miles of real estate spanning from Ex’pression College all the way to the Emeryville Public Market. 2 people drew squares while 2 people drew numbers (a.k.a. “The Number Brigade”). Everyone was sore the next day from bending down to draw. Random pedestrians were seen hopscotching along this interactive public art piece during the process.
Super Chalk was purchased from Long’s Drugstore and every color was used except black because it didn’t show up well. At the end of it all, a security guard came over on a Segway near the Public Market to thwart the final squares. “The cops were cool about it”, said the crew of chalk designers.
A few of the highlights from the hopscotch included: Godzilla’s domain, cloud city area, Dance Dance Revolution area, Mario section with pipes and coins, Pokemon section, Hollywood Walk of Fame, hand prints, Soulja Boy dance section, Monopoly section, Tetris, puzzle pieces, hand-stand-hopscotch, “crime-scene” art, a rainbow, a diving board, “dance zone” rest spots, Mt. Doom, Golem, lava, chutes & ladders, limbo section, and more!
